How NZ WoF and Rego costs work

Warrant of Fitness (WoF) every 6 or 12 months. Vehicle registration (Rego) annually, includes ACC motor vehicle levy + admin + safety levy.

  1. 1

    WoF cost & frequency

Cost: $60-100 per WoF. Frequency: 12mo for cars <3 yrs, 6mo for older cars

    Buy WoFs separately from Rego.

  2. 2

    Rego components

    Petrol private car: ACC MVL $74.77 + admin/safety $33.64 = ~$108.41/yr

Motorcycles much higher (~$415) due to higher ACC risk.

  3. 3

    Choose 3/6/12 month rego

    12mo = $108. 6mo = $54. 3mo = $27 (plus small per-period admin)

12-month is cheapest per day. 3/6 useful for SORN periods.

  4. 4

    Penalty for expired

Driving with expired WoF/Rego: $200 fine + demerit points

Insurance may also void claims if WoF expired.

Worked example

Inputs: Petrol car, 12-month rego + 1× WoF

Result: Rego $108 + WoF $75 = ~$183/yr.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a WoF cost in New Zealand?
The cost of a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection in New Zealand is not regulated, so prices vary between inspection stations. Most WoF inspections cost between $50 and $100, with some discount chains offering inspections for around $50 to $69. The fee covers the inspection only and does not include any repairs that may be required if the vehicle fails. If your vehicle fails, you will need to pay for repairs and then return for a recheck, which may be free within a specified period at the same station or may incur an additional fee. Under NZ law, a WoF is required annually for vehicles that are between 3 and 15 years old, and every 6 months for vehicles that are over 15 years old or are rebuilt vehicles. Newly registered vehicles under 3 years old do not require a WoF. Shop around or check online comparison sites to find competitive pricing in your area. How much is NZ vehicle registration?
New Zealand vehicle registration fees are set by the NZTA and vary depending on vehicle type, weight, and whether you are registering for 3 or 6 months. For a standard light passenger vehicle, a 6-month registration typically costs approximately $107 to $180. The registration fee includes the ACC Motor Vehicle Account levy (which funds road accident injury compensation), the licensing fee, and where applicable, the Road User Charges administration component. Registration can be renewed online at NZTA's vehicle registration portal (renew.transport.govt.nz), at PostShop, or through some AA outlets. You must have a valid WoF (or CoF) to renew registration. Driving an unregistered vehicle is an infringement offence. Registration labels are no longer required on windscreens in NZ, but you must still keep your registration current. Source: NZTA (nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/warrants-and-certificates).
What does a NZ WoF inspection cover?
A New Zealand Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection covers a comprehensive set of safety checks to ensure a vehicle is safe to drive on public roads. The main items inspected include: lights (headlights, indicators, brake lights, hazard lights); windscreen wipers and washers; brakes (including handbrake); steering (play, condition of components); tyres (tread depth, condition, correct fitment); seatbelts (condition and operation); body structure (rust, cracks, sharp edges); glass (cracks, chips affecting driver vision); exhaust (leaks, noise); fuel system; and vehicle identification. The inspection is carried out by a licensed Vehicle Inspector (LVI) at an NZTA-authorised testing station. If any item fails the safety standard, the vehicle is issued a rejection notice and cannot legally be driven on public roads until the fault is repaired and the vehicle is re-inspected. What is the difference between a WoF and a CoF in NZ?
In New Zealand, a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) and a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) are both safety inspection certificates but apply to different vehicle types. A WoF applies to light vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3,500 kg or less, including most private cars, utes, vans, and motorcycles. A CoF applies to heavy motor vehicles (over 3,500 kg GVM), including trucks, buses, trailers, taxis, rental vehicles, and vehicles used to carry passengers for hire or reward. CoF inspections are required every 6 months for most heavy vehicles, and cover more detailed and comprehensive inspection criteria due to the greater risk posed by heavy vehicles. CoF inspections are carried out by NZTA-authorised heavy vehicle inspectors. The standards and fee structure for CoF are different from WoF. If you operate a vehicle that requires a CoF and present it for a WoF inspection instead, you will not be compliant with your legal obligations. Estimates the annual cost of keeping a vehicle legal in NZ, including Warrant of Fitness (WoF), vehicle registration, and ACC levy. Vehicles 3 years old and over require a WoF every 6 months; newer vehicles require one annually.

How this calculator works

Annual cost = WoF inspection fees (1 or 2 per year depending on vehicle age) + registration fee. The vehicle registration fee includes the ACC motor vehicle levy and is payable every 3, 6, or 12 months.

Worked Examples

Vehicle 5 years old (6-monthly WoF)

Estimated annual compliance cost ~$242.

  1. WoF: 2 inspections × $60 = $120
  2. Registration (12-month): $122
  3. Total: $120 + $122 = $242

Vehicle 2 years old (annual WoF)

Estimated annual compliance cost ~$182.

  1. WoF: 1 inspection × $60 = $60
  2. Registration (12-month): $122
  3. Total: $60 + $122 = $182
