How NZ minimum wage pay is calculated

NZ has three minimum wage rates: Adult (16+), Starting-out (16-17 in first 6 months), and Training. All increased on 1 April 2026.

  1. 1

    Pick the right minimum wage rate

    Adult = $23.95/hr · Starting-out = $19.16/hr · Training = $19.16/hr

    Starting-out & Training are 80% of Adult ($19.16). Effective 1 April 2026.

  2. 2

    Calculate weekly minimum gross pay

    Weekly = hours_per_week × hourly_rate

    40-hour adult week = $958/wk gross. 40-hour starting-out = $766/wk gross.

  3. 3

    Annualise

    Annual = weekly × 52  (or hourly × hours × 52)

    40hr/wk Adult = $49,816/yr — just above the $48k tax bracket threshold.

  4. 4

    Calculate take-home (after PAYE, ACC, KS)

    Net = Gross − PAYE($49,816) − ACC($872) − KS($1,743)  ≈ $40,000/yr

    Adult on full-time minimum wage with 3.5% KS clears about $770/wk after deductions.

Worked example

Inputs: Adult worker, 40 hours/week

Result: Hourly $23.95 × 40 hrs = $958/wk gross × 52 = $49,816/yr → ~$40,500 take-home after PAYE/ACC/KS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum wage in NZ for 2026-27?
From 1 April 2026, the adult minimum wage in New Zealand is $23.95 per hour (before tax). This applies to all employees aged 16 and over who have completed six months with their current employer (or are aged 20 and over from their start date). At 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, this equates to a gross annual income of $48,152. The starting-out wage and training wage are set at 80% of the adult rate: $19.16 per hour. The minimum wage is reviewed annually under the Minimum Wage Act 1983, with changes taking effect on 1 April each year. All these wages are before PAYE tax, ACC levy, and any KiwiSaver deductions.
