WoF & Rego: 1 July 2026 licensing fee rise and new motorcycle ACC levy bands

From 1 July 2026 the 12-month vehicle licensing (rego) fee for a petrol private passenger car rises to $181.45 (from $172.97), and motorcycle ACC levies are restructured into three engine-size bands: 250cc or less, 251–750cc, and over 750cc. A common 251–750cc motorcycle now costs about $606.29 a year, and a car's ACC motor vehicle levy component is about $65.27. The WoF & Rego and Car Running Costs calculators — including their worked examples — now use the current figures. Source: NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) and ACC.

Fix30 June 2026

Relocation Cost: Skilled Migrant visa fee corrected to $6,450 for single applicants

The Skilled Migrant Category resident visa costs the same $6,450 for a single applicant as for a family — a Band A application fee of $2,880 plus the $3,570 immigration levy, charged once per application, with no cheaper single-applicant rate. The Relocation Cost calculator previously used an outdated ~$4,370 single figure, understating a single person's move budget by about $2,080. Source: Immigration New Zealand (Fees Guide INZ-1028).

Rate Update29 June 2026

Carbon Footprint: NZ ETS carbon price updated to ~$55/tonne

The Carbon Footprint calculator now uses the current NZ Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) spot price of about $55 per tonne (up from $50), so the estimated annual carbon-offset cost reflects today's market. The ETS price is market-set and moves daily, so treat the offset figure as indicative. Source: NZ ETS carbon market.

Rate Update24 June 2026

First Home Loan: regional house price caps removed

The Kāinga Ora First Home Loan (5% deposit) no longer has regional house price caps — eligible buyers can purchase at any price, not just under an old regional limit. Income caps still apply ($95,000 for a single buyer, $150,000 combined). The Deposit, KiwiSaver First Home Withdrawal, and related calculators have been updated to reflect this. Source: Kāinga Ora.

Fix24 June 2026

Relocation Cost: corrected Skilled Migrant visa fees

The Relocation Cost calculator now uses the current Immigration New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category resident visa fees — about $4,370 for a single applicant and $6,450 for a family (2025–26), replacing an outdated, much lower figure. Budgets for moving to New Zealand are now far more accurate. Source: Immigration New Zealand.

WoF & Rego calculator updated for the 1 January 2026 licensing fee rise

The 12-month vehicle licensing (rego) fee for a petrol private passenger car is now $172.97, reflecting the NZTA increase that took effect on 1 January 2026 (up from about $144). The WoF & Rego and Car Running Costs calculators — including their worked examples — now use the current fee. Source: NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi).

Fix24 June 2026

University Cost calculator updated for the final-year Fees Free policy

The University Cost calculator now reflects the current Fees Free policy. Fees-free study applies to your final year (up to $12,000), for study completed from 1 January 2025 — this replaced the previous first-year fees-free scheme. The calculator, eligibility note, and worked examples have been updated; the medicine example now shows the $12,000 cap. Source: Tertiary Education Commission.

Fix31 May 2026

Skilled Migrant Visa Points calculator rebuilt for the current 6-point system

The Skilled Migrant Visa Points calculator now uses the current Skilled Migrant Category that replaced the old ~160-point system on 9 October 2023. You need 6 skilled resident points: 3–6 from your single highest factor — qualification (Bachelor's Level 7 = 3 up to Doctorate Level 10 = 6), occupational registration, or income (1.5× the median wage of $35.00/hr = 3 points, 2× = 4, 3× = 6) — plus 1 point per year of skilled NZ work experience (maximum 3). These factors are no longer added together, and age is no longer counted. A skilled job or job offer from an accredited employer is required. Further SMC changes take effect 24 August 2026. Rate Update31 May 2026

IRD interest (UOMI) rates lowered, and the KiwiSaver government contribution income test added

The IRD interest (Use of Money Interest) calculator now uses the rates effective 16 January 2026: 8.97% on underpayments (down from 10.91%) and 2.25% on overpayments (down from 4.30%). The KiwiSaver Government Contribution calculator now applies the income test that started on 1 July 2025 — members with taxable income over $180,000 a year no longer receive the government contribution (the maximum stays $260.72 for those earning $180,000 or less). Best Start and Student Allowance updated to the 1 April 2026 rates

Best Start now pays $4,041 a year per child (about $77 a week, up from $73/$3,796) and — for children born on or after 1 April 2026 — is income-tested from the first year, reducing by 21c per dollar of family income above $79,000. The Student Allowance maximum for a single student aged 24 or over is now $380.43/week living away from home and $323.98/week living at home (up from $304.45/$203.73). NZ Super and Winter Energy Payment rates corrected to the official 1 April 2026 figures

The Retirement Income and NZ Super Eligibility calculators now use the official NZ Superannuation rates from 1 April 2026 (after tax, M code): single living alone $555.15/week ($28,868/year), single sharing $512.45/week, and a couple where both qualify $427.04 each ($854.08/week combined, $44,412/year). Rate Update29 May 2026

Income tax brackets corrected to current thresholds ($15,600 / $53,500 / $78,100)

Every income-tax and PAYE-based calculator now uses the NZ tax thresholds in force since 31 July 2024: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. Previously they used the older $14,000 / $48,000 / $70,000 thresholds, which slightly overstated tax. For example, tax on a $50,000 salary is now correctly $7,658 (was showing $8,020).

Fix3 May 2026

Fixed KiwiSaver Government Contribution calculation bug + extra rate fixes

Critical fix: KiwiSaver Government Contribution calculator was using a 50% match rate instead of the correct 25c per $1 (so it doubled the displayed govt contribution for users below the cap). Now correctly shows up to $260.72/year on $1,042.86 of member contributions. Also fixed: Employee Cost Calculator employer KiwiSaver rate updated from 3% to 3.5%, ESCT calculator default contribution updated to 3.5%, WoF & Rego costs corrected to current NZTA fees (~$108/yr for petrol private car including ACC MVL), RWT calculator dropdown labels now render the em-dash correctly, RUC dropdown same fix, Percentage Calculator label corrected to match input semantics.
