EV Savings Calculator
Compare the running costs of an electric vehicle versus a petrol or diesel car in NZ. Factor in electricity costs, RUC, servicing, and current fuel prices.
About this calculator

Current NZ EV vs petrol context
FY 2026-27 (post Clean Car Discount, EV RUC active)- •Electricity price (residential): ~$0.28-0.32/kWh
- •Petrol price: ~$2.80/L
- •EV RUC (since 1 April 2024): $76 per 1,000km
- •Petrol fuel excise: ~$0.77/L (built into pump price)
- •EV efficiency (typical): 15-20 kWh/100km
- •Petrol efficiency (typical): 6-10 L/100km

How EV savings vs petrol are calculated
Compare 'fuel' cost: petrol L/100km × $/L vs EV kWh/100km × $/kWh. EVs add RUC ($76/1000km) but skip $2k+/yr in fuel.
- 1
Petrol annual cost
Petrol = (km ÷ 100) × L_per_100km × price_per_L
Typical 8L/100km × $2.80 × 15,000km = $3,360.
- 2
EV annual electricity
EV_kWh = (km ÷ 100) × kWh_per_100km × $_per_kWh
15kWh/100km × $0.30 = $4.50/100km vs $22 for petrol.
- 3
EV RUC
RUC = ⌈km ÷ 1000⌉ × $76
Light EV pays RUC since 1 April 2024.
- 4
Annual saving
Saving = petrol_cost − (EV_electricity + EV_RUC)
Typical urban EV saves $1,500-2,500/yr vs petrol.
Worked example
Inputs: 15,000 km/yr, petrol 8L/100 vs EV 15kWh/100
Result: Petrol $3,360. EV $675 elec + $1,140 RUC = $1,815. Saves $1,545/yr.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much cheaper is an EV to run than a petrol car in NZ?
What is the NZ Clean Car Discount (rebate)?
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in NZ?
What is the EV charging infrastructure like in NZ?
Compares the running cost of an electric vehicle (EV) versus a petrol vehicle in NZ. EVs have higher purchase prices but much lower per-km energy costs. NZ's high renewable electricity share (80%+) makes EVs particularly economical and low-emission.
How this calculator works
EV annual energy cost = (annual km ÷ 100) × kWh/100km × electricity rate per kWh. Petrol car = (annual km ÷ 100) × L/100km × petrol price. Annual saving = petrol cost − EV cost. Note: EVs must pay Road User Charges (RUC) of $76/1,000km from 1 April 2024.
NZ EV vs Petrol Cost Benchmarks (2026–27)
| Home charging electricity rate | ~$0.30/kWh |
| Typical EV consumption | 15–20 kWh/100km |
| EV RUC rate (from 1 Apr 2024) | $76/1,000km |
| Petrol price (91) | ~$2.60/L |
| NZ renewable electricity share | >80% |
| Tesla Model 3 consumption | ~16 kWh/100km |
EV RUC rates may be reviewed periodically. Check NZTA for the current rate. Public charging costs more than home charging.
Worked Examples
EV vs petrol car, 15,000km/yr
EV saves ~$2,040/yr in fuel and energy costs.
- EV energy: (15,000 / 100) × 16kWh × $0.30 = $720
- EV RUC: 15 × $76 = $1,140
- Total EV cost: $720 + $1,140 = $1,860
- Petrol car: (15,000 / 100) × 10L × $2.60 = $3,900
- Annual saving: $3,900 − $1,860 = $2,040
Payback period on $20,000 EV purchase premium
Payback ~10 years at $2,040/yr saving.
- Annual saving on fuel/energy: $2,040
- EV purchase premium over equivalent petrol car: $20,000
- Simple payback: $20,000 / $2,040 = 9.8 years
- Note: EV servicing is cheaper (no oil changes, fewer brake wear costs)
- Insurance and depreciation should also be factored in
