How to calculate true cost to run a car in NZ

Fuel is only ~30% of total cost. Add depreciation, insurance, WoF, rego, RUC (diesel/EV), maintenance, tyres.

  1. 1

    Fuel cost

    Annual_fuel = (km ÷ 100) × L_per_100km × price_per_L

    $2.80/L petrol typical 2026.

  2. 2

    RUC (diesel/EV)

    RUC = (km ÷ 1000) × $76 per 1000km (light diesel/EV)

    Petrol cars don't pay RUC.

  3. 3

    Fixed annual costs

    Fixed = rego ($108) + WoF ($60-100) + insurance ($600-1200)

    Insurance higher for newer/younger drivers.

  4. 4

    Maintenance + tyres + depreciation

    Variable = ~10c per km (typical mid-range car)

    Depreciation alone is ~$2-4k/yr for newer cars.

  5. 5

    Total cost per km

    Per_km = total_annual ÷ annual_km

    NZ typical: 60-80c/km all-in.

Worked example

Inputs: 15,000 km/yr petrol, 8 L/100km, $2.80/L

Result: Fuel $3,360 + rego/WoF/ins ~$1,400 + maintenance $1,500 ≈ $6,260/yr (~42c/km).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to run a car in NZ per year?
Running a car in New Zealand costs significantly more than most people expect. When you add up all major expenses, the total annual cost for an average petrol vehicle typically ranges from $8,000 to $15,000 or more. Key components include fuel (at roughly $3.00 per litre, a car averaging 10L/100km and travelling 14,000 km/year will spend around $4,200 on petrol); registration ($110–180 per six months, so $220–360 per year); Warrant of Fitness ($60–100 per inspection); insurance ($1,000–2,500 depending on vehicle value and cover type); servicing and repairs ($500–1,500/year); tyres; parking; and depreciation — often the single largest cost. The AA (Automobile Association) publishes annual running cost data broken down by vehicle type as a useful benchmark. Source: AA NZ — Vehicle Running Costs (ā.co.nz).
What is a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) and how much does it cost?
A Warrant of Fitness (WoF) is a periodic safety inspection required for most New Zealand light vehicles. It checks that your vehicle meets minimum safety standards covering brakes, tyres, lights, steering, windscreen, and other safety-critical components. Most light vehicles (cars, utes, vans under 3,500 kg) require a WoF annually. The cost varies by provider — expect to pay $60–100 at most garages, with some chains (e.g., Midas, WOF Centres) offering set prices. If your vehicle fails, you will pay additional costs to fix the defects before a recheck (which may incur a further fee of around $30–50). A WoF sticker is displayed on the windscreen showing the expiry date. Driving without a current WoF can result in a $200 fine and your vehicle being taken off the road. Source: NZTA — Warrant of Fitness (nzta.govt.nz).
How much is vehicle registration in NZ?
New Zealand vehicle registration (rego) is renewed every six or twelve months and costs vary by vehicle type and whether ACC levies are included. For most light petrol passenger vehicles, the six-month registration fee is approximately $110–180, which includes the ACC Motor Vehicle levy (which funds accident compensation for road crash injuries). The exact amount depends on your vehicle's engine size and fuel type. Diesel vehicles pay Road User Charges (RUC) separately per kilometre instead of the fuel excise component. You can renew registration online through the NZTA portal, at PostShops, or via AA branches. Letting registration lapse can result in a $200 infringement fee, and driving an unregistered vehicle is an offence. Registration details are linked to your vehicle's number plate. What are average NZ car insurance costs?
Car insurance premiums in New Zealand vary widely depending on the vehicle's value, your age and driving history, your location, and the type of cover chosen. Comprehensive insurance (covering your vehicle, third-party property, and theft) typically costs $1,000–2,500 per year for an average passenger car. Third-party-only policies are cheaper at $300–600 per year but only cover damage you cause to others' property. Factors that increase premiums include being under 25, having claims history, high-value vehicles (e.g., EVs), and urban locations. New Zealand does not have compulsory third-party insurance, but ACC covers personal injury in road crashes regardless of fault. Major insurers include AMI, State, Tower, AA Insurance, and Trade Me Insurance. Compare quotes annually as prices vary significantly. Source: Consumer NZ — Car Insurance (consumer.org.nz).

Estimates the total annual cost of owning and running a car in NZ, including fuel, insurance, WoF, registration, maintenance, and depreciation. Depreciation is often the largest hidden cost.

How this calculator works

Annual cost = fuel + insurance + registration (~$122/yr) + WoF ($45–$80 per inspection, 1–2 per year) + maintenance + depreciation. Depreciation is typically 10–20% of vehicle value per year for older vehicles, or $2,000–$8,000+ annually for newer ones.

NZ Annual Vehicle Running Cost Components (2026–27)

Registration (light vehicle, 12-month)~$122
WoF inspection$45–$80 per inspection
Comprehensive insurance$1,000–$2,500/yr
Servicing$300–$600/yr
Tyres (amortised)$400–$800/yr
AA estimated total (new vehicle)$8,000–$15,000/yr

Depreciation is the largest single cost for most vehicles. Factor it in when comparing ownership costs.
