How carpet quantity is calculated

Carpet sold in broadloom (3.66m wide). Calculate strips needed × room length, add 10% waste for cuts.

  1. 1

    Calculate room area

Area = length × width (m²)

Add 5-10% for waste with simple shapes; 15-20% for complex.

  2. 2

    Broadloom strips needed

    Strips = ⌈room_width ÷ 3.66⌉

Wider room = more strips = more seams.

  3. 3

    Total cost

    Cost = total_m² × (carpet_price + underlay + install)

    NZ: carpet $80-200/m², underlay $20/m², install $15-25/m².

Worked example

Inputs: 5m × 4m room, $100/m² carpet + $20 underlay + $15 install

Result: Area 20m² + 10% waste = 22m² × $135 = $2,970.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to carpet a house in NZ?
For a typical 100 m² NZ house, expect to pay $4,000–$8,000 for budget synthetic carpet supplied and installed (including underlay), $10,000–$15,000 for mid-range wool blend, and $20,000+ for premium wool or specialty carpets. Cost per m² supplied and installed: budget synthetic $40–$80, mid-range wool blend $100–$160, premium wool $180–$300+. Quotes usually include uplift of old carpet, smoothedge nailing, and basic installation. Source: Flooring Xtra, Carpet Court.
What is broadloom and why does it matter?
Broadloom is the standard width of carpet rolls. In NZ, broadloom is 3.66m (12 feet). For rooms wider than 3.66m, you will need a join — carpet installers minimise visible joins by placing them in low-traffic areas. The broadloom width affects wastage: a room of 3.5m × 5m has minimal wastage, but a room of 4m × 5m needs an extra strip with significant offcuts. Always discuss the seam plan with your installer. Source: NZ carpet retailers.
Should I choose wool or synthetic carpet for NZ homes?
NZ wool carpet (often Cavalier Bremworth or Hycraft) is more durable, naturally fire-resistant, breathable, and biodegradable but costs 2–3× more than synthetic. Synthetic carpet (nylon, polypropylene) is more stain-resistant, cheaper, easier to clean, and a good choice for high-traffic areas, rentals, or families with kids/pets. Solution-dyed nylon offers the best stain resistance. Wool blends (e.g. 80/20) offer a middle ground. Source: NZ Wool industry, retailer advice.
How important is carpet underlay and what types are available?
Underlay is the foam or rubber pad placed under your carpet — and it can extend the life of your carpet by 30–50%. Quality underlay also improves comfort underfoot, sound insulation, and thermal performance (helps insulate floors in NZ homes that often lack underfloor insulation). Common NZ types: standard PU foam ($8–$15/m²), premium felt or wool blend ($15–$25/m²), and specialty acoustic underlay ($25–$40/m²) for upstairs rooms in apartments. Most installers recommend 8–11mm thickness for residential carpet. Cheap or worn underlay causes the carpet to flatten and wear out years sooner. Always replace underlay when re-carpeting unless the existing underlay is in excellent condition. Source: Carpet Court, Bremworth installation guides.

A carpet calculator works out how many square metres of carpet you need and the cost of underlay, installation, and uplift of old carpet. Standard NZ broadloom carpet is 3.66m wide.

How this calculator works

Enter the room dimensions, carpet $/m², and underlay $/m². The calculator adds wastage (typically 10–15%), then totals carpet + underlay + installation.

NZ Carpet Costs (2026)

Budget synthetic$35–$60 per m²
Mid-range wool blend$80–$120 per m²
Premium wool$150–$250+ per m²
Standard underlay$15–$25 per m²
Installation$10–$20 per m²
Broadloom width3.66m standard

Worked Examples

Living room 5m × 4m, mid-range wool blend at $100/m² supply + install

Approx total: $2,750 (incl underlay & install)

  1. Area: 5 × 4 = 20 m²
  2. Plus 10% wastage: 22 m²
  3. Carpet: 22 × $100 = $2,200
  4. Underlay: 22 × $20 = $440
  5. Installation: 22 × $15 = $330
  6. Subtotal: $2,970
