The pet cost calculator estimates the annual and lifetime cost of owning a dog, cat, or rabbit in New Zealand — food, vet care, council registration, insurance, grooming, and boarding — so you can budget realistically before adopting.
How this calculator works
The lifetime cost of a pet routinely lands between $20,000 and $45,000 — far beyond the adoption fee that most owners budget for. The calculator builds an annual base from food, routine vet care, council registration for dogs ($50-120 depending on the council), insurance if selected, grooming, and holiday boarding, then multiplies by realistic NZ lifespans (dogs 12-15 years, cats 14-18, rabbits 8-12) and adds one-off setup costs such as desexing, microchipping, bedding, and crates — typically $1,200 for a dog and $600 for a cat. Insurance deserves particular attention: at $30-80/month it looks expensive, but a single cruciate ligament surgery can cost $4,000-6,000, and pet insurance in NZ must be taken out while the animal is young to avoid pre-existing-condition exclusions. Note that dogs registered after 1 July 2006 must be microchipped.
