How NZ funeral cost is estimated
Service tier × method (burial/cremation) × regional cost, less WINZ Funeral Grant if eligible.
- 1
Base service cost
Base = tier_rate × regional_mult
Basic cremation $4.5-7k, standard service $9.5-12k, premium $17-25k.
- 2
Burial-only extras
Burial_extras = headstone + plot fee (if burial)
Plot $1,500-3,000 depending on cemetery.
- 3
WINZ Funeral Grant
Grant = up to $2,697.43 (asset/income tested, 2026 max)
Asset test: deceased's estate < $3.5k for surviving spouse.
- 4
Net cost
Net = base + burial_extras − WINZ_grant
Plus ACC grant up to $7,990.30 if death from injury.
Worked example
Inputs: Standard cremation, Auckland, eligible for WINZ
Result: Base $10.5k × 1.25 = $13.1k − $2,560 WINZ = $10.5k net.

The NZ funeral cost calculator estimates the total cost of a funeral by service tier, burial versus cremation, and region, then subtracts the Work and Income Funeral Grant (up to $2,697.43 in 2026) or the ACC funeral grant where they apply.
How this calculator works
Funeral costs in New Zealand vary enormously — from around $4,500 for a basic no-service cremation to $25,000 or more for a premium service with a reception. The calculator starts from a base cost for your chosen tier, applies a regional multiplier (Auckland and Queenstown typically run 20-30% above the national baseline), and adds burial-specific extras such as a cemetery plot ($1,500-$3,000) and headstone. It then deducts financial help you may qualify for: the asset-tested Work and Income Funeral Grant of up to $2,697.43, or — if the death resulted from an injury covered by ACC — a funeral grant of up to $7,990.30. Pre-paid funeral plans of up to $10,000 are also exempt from the residential-care asset test, which is why many people pre-arrange. Get itemised quotes from two or three funeral directors: pricing for the same service can differ by thousands.
