How NZ student allowance is calculated
Student allowance is paid weekly based on age, study status, parental income (under 24), and living situation (away/home). Abates above thresholds.
- 1
Base rate (single, away from home)
Single living away: $304.45/wk max (after tax)
Living at home with parents: $203.73/wk.
- 2
Abatement on own income
Reduction = max(0, weekly_income − $250) × 70%
Earn over $250/week → 70¢ cut from allowance per $1.
- 3
Parental income test (under 24)
If parental income > $65,000 → allowance abates further
Most students under 24 use parental income test.
- 4
Annual entitlement
Annual = weekly_allowance × 52
Plus accommodation supplement if rent > threshold.
Worked example
Inputs: Single, living away, earning $200/wk part-time, parents < threshold
Result: Full $304.45/wk (no abatement, income below threshold) → $15,831/yr.
